“RATS” is an ongoing magazine that looks at the cultures surrounding pigeons. It explores the history of human-pigeon relationships and dynamics, from their use in war to the present-day misconceptions that have led to disgust, hatred, and the term “rats of the sky”. The feather typeface, also named “RATS”, was created by me solely for this magazine, due to the relevant topic. I created this typeface using real wood pigeon feathers by shaping them into the letterforms and scanning them in. I then used the silhouettes of the feathers to create the alphabet. Due to the busy nature of this typeface, it isn’t designed to be used on its own in context, but rather randomly replace certain letterforms of a seperate typeface.

RE-ENTRY is an archive publication documenting reports of space debris that have survived atmospheric re-entry and fallen back to Earth. Information on these cases are fragmented across the internet, and as such, this archive aims to centralise these key case studies. The printed version of this archive was handcrafted by me using coptic binding. This was a deliberate choice for two reasons. Firstly, this binding allows the book to lie completely flat, ensuring that information on the double page spreads, particularly the map and full image spreads, are not lost in the gutter. Aesthetically, the exposed spine showcases the silver paper stock, referencing the industrial, mechanical and worn materials of the recovered debris.

This logo was designed as part of a competition for Fog Lane Park’s 100th anniversary, where it would be used across any graphics within the park. I wanted to create a logo that felt more up-to-date than its current design and create a peaceful tone that reflected my experience with the park. My final logo was inspired by a heron I once saw in the park's pond, which became one of my favourite memories there.

A design identity and publication for a bird-print festival based in Manchester’s Circle Square. The festival combines print and stamp with the underappreciated bird species in and around Manchester. The identity borrows from the space’s name, using halftone for ‘Circle’ and pixels for ‘Square’. I leaned into the colour scheme of the identity, creating a poster using three layers of tracing paper which I proceeded to scan in on top of one another, resulting in a textured and cloudy design that compliments the visuals of the brand.

This project was a response to a brief surrounding the right to roam. Heritage sites across the UK are an important part of our history; however, many of them are privately owned or sit on private land, creating a disconnect between people and their cultural identity. My response was a publication and a calendar, which included information about the sites and any issues around their private ownership. Within the viusal identity, I recreated each site with clay and used bitmaps to create a tone of mystery.

SEIUNCTA is a modular typeface in which each letterform is constructed in a 6x5 area from one continuous line that doesn’t connect. The typeface was inspired by the identities of 80s and 90s tech companies such as Atari. Alongside the typeface, I presented the letterforms in a short animation and type specimen folded leaflet.

A set of experimental digtial collages from my photos taken in the Lake District.

About Me:Joseph Northcott Fenwick is a multidisciplinary designer who specialises in editorial, publication, photography, and identity design. His appreciation for physical publications grew during his time studying Graphic Design at Manchester Metropolitan University, where his practice found its focus. Joseph is drawn to the tactile, analogue nature of the medium, the experience of holding and feeling a physical object, and thinks carefully about how material choices and paper stock can create something textural and immersive.

A recurring thread in his work is the application of a contemporary, experimental design sensibility to subject matter traditionally presented in a more classical or conventional way, whether that's heritage sites, natural history, birds, or similar subjects. His current focus is "RATS", a magazine exploring the history of human-pigeon relationships, from their use in warfare to the modern-day misconceptions that have led to widespread disgust and the label "rats of the sky". It is a project he aims to continue developing throughout the coming year.
In 2025, Joseph worked with Ashorne Hill producing whitepapers, applying an editorial approach to professional content.

He is now based in Manchester and open to freelance work, whether that's publication design, brand identity, or photography-led projects.
